Road to Valentine’s: Romantic Songs to Listen to Behind the Wheel

The season of love is here, and what better way is there to remind your lady of your love than by spending time together? For an idea, why not go for a road trip? Check your steel tubes, fasten your seat belts, and step on the gas. Enjoy the drive with your honey, on the road to Valentine’s.

Forget about chilling at home, or going for a nice dinner out. Clichés are a damning note that says you’re too lazy to spice things. You wouldn’t want your lady getting this memo, would you? Darling dearest may be okay with it, but okay mustn’t be enough for you. A road trip is your way of getting her heart again, and keeping it tight. It’s even better that you don’t have a destination planned. That is love after all, right: a thrilling ride to surprises?

To pump up your trip, here are songs you can play. Beware, though, for you might have to prepare for the coming of hugs and kisses.

steel tubes 5“Passenger Seat” by Stephen Speaks

“And I’ve got all that I need, right here in the passenger seat.”

What human will not swoon for such a passionate declaration in mellow acoustic? It’s a great reminder of your emotion, with a rawness that’s trying to say that your heart is in those words. You’re literally (okay, figuratively) pouring your heart out in song! Of course it helps that a passenger seat exists. Thank goodness you’re driving, right?

steel tubes 4“Penny & Me” by Hanson

“It’s always Penny and me tonight.”

If you can’t catch it from the song—because you’re swooning over the vocal chops of Hanson—“Penny & Me” is about the love of a couple who can’t stand being apart. They adore being together, and see each other growing old side by side. There’s even a part where it says “Penny and me like to roll the windows down,” which—yes, happens in a car, and of course—is your cue to do the same. Worried your honey’s going to be jealous of some girl named Penny? Why not change the name to hers for a personalized effect? It may be funny and cute.

steel tubes 3“Home” by Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes

“Home is wherever I’m with you.”

See, you don’t need to be home to have fun this Valentine’s, because home is where your dearest is. This is you saying that you just need each other to really live. There’s even a cool part in the song where the vocalists—true lovers back then, I might add—sung speaking to each other about how they fell in love. You can have that moment with your lady in the car, too, and with your own story. I do recommend trying it out for fun and extra feels.

steel tubes 2“There is a Light that Never Goes Out” by the Smiths

“And if a double-decker bus crashes into us, to die by your side is such a heavenly way to die.”

It’s morbid, but doesn’t that make it all the more romantic? It’s as if you’re Romeo and Juliet, in a tragedy that’s more modern—and unfortunate. Even sing it out to show her that you really mean it. If she falls more in love with you, then she’s a keeper. But then again, it is okay to be creeped out. So if your dearest is feeling just that, then it’s time to play another song.

steel tubes 1“I Will Follow You into the Dark” by Death Cab for Cutie

“If there’s no one beside you when your soul embarks, I will follow you into the dark.”

Assure your honey that you’ll be together even after death. It’s a twist to the tragedy that’s going to be too sweet for her to handle. You’ve even assured her that your love is true, and it’s stronger than any end. There’s no way your Valentine’s spoiled with this song to follow! But if your honey does want to come home, do come home. Congratulations, you win at (s)caring!
