The 7 Crowning Jewels in Jay Leno’s Car Collection
September 16, 2014
American comedian Jay Leno is known for hosting “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno”, which aired on NBC from May 1992 to February 2014. Aside from that, Leno is also one of the most esteemed car collectors in America, boasting more than 100 cars and over 50 motorcycles. He has a swanky garage, a team of experienced mechanics, and a web TV show that features his cars. Bought with a hefty price and made from the finest metal parts, here are seven of the most awesome cars you’ll find in his garage.
1909 Baker Electric
Yes, it’s perfectly working. Manufactured by the Baker Motor Vehicle Company, this classic beauty still runs 110 miles for every charge. The company sold its first electric car to Thomas Edison who also developed it batteries. Leno’s carriage car still has Edison’s original batteries and it works just fine! Instead of steering wheels, it has brass fittings. It has no fumes and no cranks which makes it appealing to women. In addition, it also has a make-up compact with a mirror installed in its interior wall. The 1909 Baker Electric is the favorite car of Leno’s wife and I think you can understand why.
1927 Duesenberg Model X
Leno found this gem abandoned in a deserted area sometime in the 1940s. There are only 13 of this kind that was produced, with only four surviving and he got one of them. The 1927 Duesenberg Model X was the last automobile designed by Fred Duesenberg before the company was bought by E.L. Cord.
1936 Cord 810/812
A car with many firsts, the 1936 Cord 810/812 is one of the most beautiful cars of all time. This baby is the first car to have a horn ring, enclosed headlights that can be opened with a hand crank, and a covered gas cap. At the time of its release, it has advanced features such as a unitized body, an alligator hood, front-wheel drive, and independent front suspension.
1953 Blastolene Special
Officially known as the 1953 Chrysler Tank Car, this aluminium-clad dude is powered by a 28.4-liter Continental-designed engine. This type of engine is designed for a 120,000-pound M47 Patton Tan which makes this car tank both imposing and impressive. Leno commissioned turbo specialist Gale Banks Engineering to make twin turbochargers for his Blastolene Special. This commanding tank weighs give tons and stretches to up to 20 feet.
1975 426 Hemi Plymouth Duster
Behind this beauty is a heart-warming story of the car’s creator Paul Annunziata . He was able to finish this supercharged Duster car through the $10,000 he won from a scratch-off ticket. When Annunziata was diagnosed with lung cancer, he made sure that his baby will be in a safe and secure home where it will be cared for and not be sold. He donated it to Leno who in turn donated the money he was supposed to pay Annunziata to McPherson College. This school allows you to get a four-year degree in auto mechanics and auto restoration.
2006 EcoJet
With all his knowledge and expertise in the car industry, Leno collaborated with General Motors in the production of the 2006 EcoJet. This sleek gorgeous car is powered by Honeywell LT-101 turbine engine and clad with pure carbon fiber over Kevlar. Its design is a hybrid of a race car and an aeronautical craft. It runs on bio-diesel which is in line with the green movement that car companies are going for.
2010 Jaguar CX75
Leno is one of the two people in possession of this stunning beast. This supercar can get you to 100 miles per hour in less than six seconds! How’s that for lightning speed?! This two-seater hybrid-electric car was named CX75 in celebration of Jaguar’s 75th anniversary with C standing for concept and X for experimental.
These are just some of the awesome cars in Leno’s garage. We expect to see more additions in his grand auto collection in the coming years. Car enthusiasts should definitely check his website for the latest classic finds and innovative developments in the car industry.
