Leafspring Store in the Philippines

Suspension systems are one of the most important parts of a car. They serve two purposes: 1) weight support for passengers and/or items in the car and 2) shock absorption when the automobile passes through rough terrain. There are two kinds of suspension devices made for automobiles: coils and leaf springs.

What is a leaf spring?

A leaf spring is a kind of suspension device made from several sheets of metal bolted together and shaped in a crescent form at the end of the car’s axle.

What are its functions?

Leaf springs act as shock absorbers by taking on the stress of the terrain a car passes through. This, in turn, ensures a comfortable ride for all passengers in the car. They are also weight equalizers, re-distributing the car’s weight and stabilizers, balancing the car’s position from the ground.

How does it function?

When passing through coarse terrain, road bumps and inconsistencies such as potholes or uneven pathways, the curved leaf springs bend upward, absorbing the shock for the entire car. Roberts AIPMC is a leaf spring store in the Philippines that offers the very best in leaf spring quality for your load-bearing vehicle.

What kind of cars are use leaf springs?

Leaf springs are not used for lightweight vehicles such as compact cars, sedans, or passenger vans. They cater specifically to large vehicles that can carry very heavy loads. Vehicles such as cargo trucks, tankers, mixers, shuttle buses, AUVs, and mega taxis employ the use of these bolted sheets of metal in their suspension system.

Kinds of leaf springs

There are two kinds of leaf springs out in the market today: mono leaf & multi leaf. A mono leaf spring is made from only one sheet of metal; its body thick in the middle, then narrowing out towards the ends. This suspension device is mainly applied to large vehicles that can carry light to medium loads. A multi leaf spring is comprised of several sheets of metal fastened together by bolts. They are similar in appearance to mono leaf springs, but are thicker in the middle portion due to the combination of many thin metal strips. Multi leaf springs are ideal for automobiles that can carry moderate to heavy loads during long journeys such as tankers, mixers, and public utility vehicles.

Maintenance

Just like any other automotive part, leaf springs are also subject to wear and tear over time. Here are some tips on how you can properly maintain your vehicle’s leaf springs.

  • Resetting – With prolonged use, leaf springs lose its curved shape, becoming more horizontal in form and thereby losing its shock-absorbing abilities. Pre-setting is a technique done to leaf springs prior to installation to bend the metal sheets. Resetting its form with a “bulldozer” is necessary to bring it back to proper function.
  • Tightening the u-bolt – Doing this prevents the leaf spring from sagging, keeping it upright and allowing it to properly absorb shock.
  • Leaf replacement – If the individual leaves of the leaf spring are broken, unshackle the device and replace the old leaf with a new one.
  • Clean-up – Use a wire brush to remove dirt and debris in between the spaces of the leaves. Clean the shackles with a wire brush as well to ensure seamless movement during travel. In order to grease the leaf spring, spray them with a silicon-based lubricant.
