Responsible Motoring – How to Reduce your Carbon Footprint
June 25, 2014
As a motorist, there are a number of things you can do to minimize your carbon footprint. Although many people claim that global warming is a hoax, it doesn’t take a scientist to see the effect that greenhouse gases have on our environment. Just take a look at what your exhaust system is spewing and you’ll see what we’re talking about. Whatever your stand may be in this debate, we hope that you would follow these tips to becoming a more responsible motorist.
Support public transportation
Not the most convenient mode of transport we admit, but it’s the most viable, especially if you live in the city. We’re not saying that you fully give up your driving privileges; you just need to support public transportation at least once a week. Taking public transportation is said to be three times more fuel efficient than taking your private vehicle so if you want to save a bit on gas money, start taking the bus or MRT.
Get fit and walk more
If you’re one of the lucky ones who live near where they work, then why not walk more? Walking isn’t only the most environment friendly mode of transport – it’s also the healthiest! So next time you step out to grab lunch, try walking instead of hailing a cab. Just make sure to invest in a good pair of walking shoes for utmost comfort.
Ride your bicycle
Ah the bicycle – the hipster’s favorite mode of transport. Just like walking, this mode of transportation is going to get you where you need to be, without any carbon dioxide emission. All you need to do is hop on and enjoy the scenery as you take a ride around your neighbourhood. The only fuels that you’ll be burning are those stubborn love handles, so be ready to emerge a sexy beast after your biking workout.
Carpool with colleagues or friends who live near you
For those who want to minimize their carbon footprint, but are too coward to brave the rush hour squeeze, try carpooling with colleagues who live around your area. All you need to do is ask around and start a system that will help you all save on gas. Additionally, carpooling beats those stressful drives to the office, because now, you’ll have new friends to chat with as you slowly make your way through the morning traffic jam.
Fly only when needed
Since air travel tops the list when it comes to carbon dioxide emissions, take a personal oath that you will only fly when needed. Instead of getting on a plane for a 30-minute ride to the next major island, turn the trip into an adventure by taking on those fancy ferries!
Get an eco-friendly car
Lastly, pick a car that will reflect your eco-friendly lifestyle. Those V8 SUV’s aren’t just gas guzzling monsters – they’re also quite overrated. These days, it’s all about responsible consumption, so get a car that can give you great fuel economy.
