3 Iconic Cars James Bond Drove Before Spectre
The cool guns, the slick suits, the death-defying action, and the hot girls – all of these things are always-present elements in a Bond movie. But it seems like I’m forgetting one important aspect – ah yes, the cars. After all, it’s only fitting for Agent 007, one of the most prominent spies in fictional history, to have some of the best rides.
From the engine down to their mufflers, James Bond’s cars have become as iconic as their driver as time goes by. Therefore, it’s only right that they are given honor to. So without further ado, here are the wheels the man with the license to kill has driven before.
Aston Martin DB5
Featured in over six James Bond films in total – Goldfinger, Thunderball, GoldenEye, Tomorrow Never Dies, Casino Royale, Skyfall, and Spectre – this posh car, if not the most, is perhaps one of the most recognizable Bond cars in the franchise’s entire history.
Released in 1963, this luxury supercar is created with smoothness and elegance in mind. And as evident with its curved and streamline shape, as well as its expensive interior, this ride is suitable for no one less for the Her Royal Highness’s finest spy.
Believe it or not, there was a time when a Bond movie was primarily set in the land of the rising sun. Given the setting, it’s only right that James Bond had to rock a Japanese car. And mind you, what Bond drove was no ordinary ride; it’s one of Toyota’s finest cars and arguably its first-ever supercar: it’s the Toyota 2000GT.
Because it was limited-production, it’s one of the rarest cars in the world today. In fact, only 351 units were built – kind of like how many (or few) some Italian supercars are produced, and one unit was known to have fetched an amount that is around $ 1,200,000. Sure, the price may seem high, but hey, it’s definitely worth coughing up if it’s going to make you feel like the best fictional British spy to ever walk the earth.
Pierce Brosnan’s reiteration of the much-loved MI6 operative isn’t exactly well-received by a lot of old-school die-hard fans, but you have to admit that the cars Mr. Brosnan drove as Bond more than make up for the over-the-top campiness of his films. And one of those would have to be the BMW Z8, which was featured in the 1999 film The World Is Not Enough.
The BMW Z8 is special car; it’s just that Bond’s is a lot more special, as his is equipped with missile launchers, caltrops, self-inflating tires and a near-impenetrable body. In addition, it’s also remote-controllable via a Sony-Ericsson phone. All of those things may seem a bit too excessive for even an elite car owner, but not for Bond. After all, aside from a driving license, he has a license to kill.
Love him or hate him, you can’t deny that James Bond has already made movie history. And what better way that the franchise to ride to the hall of fame than with his cool and shiny cars? After all, 007 saves the world on a regular basis; he deserves it.
